New York State Requirements
Required Continuing Education Hours
Life, Accident/Health, and Variable Annuities; or Life/Variable Annuities Producers
15 CE hours are required every 2-year license term.
Property and Casualty Producers
15 CE hours are required every 2-year license term.
Life/Health and Property/Casualty (combined license) Producers
30 CE hours are required every 2 year license term.
Public Adjusters
15 CE hours are required every 2-year license term.
Nonresident CE Requirements
Nonresident Pubic Adjusters must complete the New York Public Adjuster CE requirements.
License Term
The license term for Producers is every 2 years, based on the licensee’s date of birth in odd- or even-numbered years. Licensees born in an even-numbered year are required to complete their CE in even-numbered years. Licensees born in an odd-numbered year are required to complete their CE in odd-numbered years.
Public Adjuster's license term ends on 12/31 of even-numbered years.
CE Subject Requirements
Category restrictions:
Producers and Adjusters must complete their CE requirement by taking courses approved only in the line of authority licensed for.
Combination licensed producers must complete 15 hours for each line licensed.
Final Exam Requirements
Self-study final exams are required to be monitored by a state-approved monitor. A list of CE monitors approved by New York can be found here. We receive an updated list of approved monitors every month from the State, but if the monitor you are attempting to use is not accepted by our system, please have them contact us at 1-800-749-7277. Monitors not on file with AOIS will not be allowed to proctor a AOIS exam.
Exam rules:
The final exam is closed
book, and no outside information may be used to complete the
exam. The final exam must be passed with a score of 70
percent or higher to receive credit. If the final exam is
not passed on the first attempt, students have an unlimited number of
retakes, but monitors will be required to re-enter their approval
number before each attempt.
CE Carryover Allowance
Excess CE hours are not allowed to be carried forward to the next 2-year license term.
Course Repetition Rules
A licensee cannot ever repeat a course for credit.
Certificate of Completion
AOIS provides online, printable certificates of completion in New York. Certificates of completion will be available to print online immediately after the final exam is passed. The licensee must keep a copy of each certificate of completion in his or her files for 5 years.
License Renewal Process
Licensees can renew their license online here. Licensees must enter course completion information, found on the certificate of completion, onto the license renewal application.
CE Exemptions
The following individuals are exempt from CE requirements:
Licensees who hold an independent adjuster license
Licensees who hold a bail bond license
Licensees who hold a mortgage guarantee license
Licensees who hold a viatical settlement license
Licensees currently on active military duty
Non-resident producers in good standing with their home state.
